Since 8:00 AM this morning, Taal Volcano's activity has been generally characterized by weak emission of steam-laden plumes 300 to 500 meters high from the Main Crater that drifted to the general southwest.

Situation Overview

At 5:30 PM on 12 January 2020, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has raised Alert Level 4 over Taal Volcano indicating that hazardous eruption is possible within hours to days. In its 7:30 PM advisory on the same day, the agency reiterated total evacuation of Taal Volcano Island and additional evacuation of areas at high-risk to pyroclastic density currents and volcanic tsunami within a 14-kilometer radius from the main crater. Latest sulfur dioxide (S02) emission was measured at an average of 1,442 tonnes/day today at 5:00 PM.

The activity of Tall volcano, monitored over the last 24 hours, continues to be characterized by steady steam emission and weak explosions with ash plumes up to 800 meters high.

According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), more than 70,000 people have been sheltered in 300 evacuation centres in the provinces of Cavite and Batangas and more than 96,000 have been affected. In addition, 6 roads have been closed and 643 flights cancelled.

QUEZON CITY, Jan. 16 (PIA)—The Department of Education (DepEd) has issued a memorandum instituting emergency measures to address the dislocation of basic education learners from their school of origin due to the recent eruption of Taal Volcano.

Under the memorandum, DepEd ordered schools to accept student-transferees from areas affected by the Taal Volcano eruption even without the necessary documents.

  1. The government of the Republic of Korea has decided to provide US$200,000 in humanitarian assistance through the Philippine Red Cross to help about 45,000 people displaced by the eruption of the Philippines' Taal Volcano that began on January 12.

  2. The assistance is expected to contribute to the stabilization of the lives of the displaced people by providing relief supplies in a speedy manner to people staying at shelters due to the volcanic eruption.

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga, Jan.16 (PIA) -- Member-agencies of the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council 3 (RDRRMC 3) currently provide assistance to communities affected by the eruption of Taal volcano in CALABARZON.

Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Regional Director and RDRRMC 3 Vice Chairperson for Response Marites Maristela disclosed that her agency has provided 3,000 Family Food Packs; 1,000 sleeping kits; and 1,000 malong.
