Lava, ash and mudflows spewed in to communities for several days after the initial eruption of Fuego Volcano. More than one month later, Red Cross teams are still providing aid and comfort to survivors in the Guatemala City area.

The more than 1,600 volunteers on the ground “are exhausted, but their resolve is unwavering,” said Francesca Rocca, President of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). He added, “These families are our priority”.

Situation
On June 3 2018, the Fuego volcano in southern Guatemala violently erupted and caused widespread destruction and loss of lives, as ash, lava and pyroclastic flow from the volcano covered the surrounding area. The situation was made worse with a second eruption of the same volcano on 5 June.  To date 110 people are reported dead and 197 people remain missing, hundreds of homes were destroyed and 12,000 people were evacuated to safer locations. In total 1.7 people million people have been affected.

Voluntarios de Cruz Roja Guatemalteca en conjunto con Voluntarios de Cruz Roja Mexicana y el apoyo de Cruz Roja Española e IBERMED instalaron 45 duchas y 10 tinacos para abastecer las duchas en los albergues administrados por Cruz Roja Guatemalteca. Las duchas al momento de su instalación fueron clasificadas para hombres, mujeres, niñas y niños; con el objetivo de mejorar las condiciones higiénico sanitarias de la población afectada por la emergencia del Volcán de Fuego.

Panama/Geneva, 12 June 2018 – With 109 people now known to have been killed in the Fuego volcano disaster, and with 1.7 million people still at risk, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is putting long-term plans in place to support the survivors.

The first eruption of the Fuego volcano on Sunday 3 June killed 109 people and injured 58 others. Nearly 200 people are still missing, and more than 12,000 people are still unable to return to their communities.

This Emergency Appeal seeks a total of 2,036,967 Swiss francs to enable the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) to support the Guatemalan Red Cross (GRC) to deliver humanitarian assistance to 6,000 people for 12 months, with a strong focus on health, livelihoods, disaster risk reduction and institutional capacity development. The planned response reflects the current situation and information available at this time of the evolving operation, and will be adjusted based on further developments and more detailed assessments.

Ninety-nine people are now known to have died in Guatemala’s Fuego volcano disaster, with nearly 200 people still missing days after the 3 June eruption.

The Guatemalan Red Cross has been responding since the outset. Volunteers and staff have given medical treatment to survivors before transferring them to hospitals in Guatemala City. The Red Cross is also supporting thousands of people who were evacuated from the danger zone, and helping to reunite families that were separated during the disaster.

Panama/Geneva, 4 June 2018 – Wounded and traumatised survivors of the Fuego volcanic eruption in Guatemala are being rushed to hospital by the Red Cross, as urgent work continues to evacuate communities from the danger zone.

At least 25 people died when the volcano, which lies 40km south-west of the capital Guatemala City, began its eruption on Sunday 3 June, sending deadly pyroclastic flows and ash across a 15-kilometre radius. As many as 1.7 million people may be affected.
