Background

The countries of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) are highly vulnerable to a range of natural hazards, including earthquakes, hurricanes, floods, tsunamis, landslides, volcanoes, and drought. In addition, disasters triggered by environmental and industrial incidents, such as forest fires and chemical and oil spills, pose a potential threat. At times, El Niño Southern Oscillation events and poor land use management exacerbate the effects of these hazards.

Bogota_(dpa) _ Some 13,000 people were ordered to leave their homes on the slopes of the Colombian volcano Nevado del Huila on Tuesday, hours after it started spewing ash and lumps of lava and rock - called pyroclasts - into the air.

Situación General.

Desde las 4:50 p.m. hora local, del día 14 de abril de 2008 se presentó un sismo de magnitud 2.0 en la escala de Richter con epicentro en el Volcán Nevado del Huila. Posteriormente, sobre las 11:08 p.m. el Ingeominas reporta que el Volcán inició proceso de carácter eruptivo.
