Philippines: Mayon Volcano - Aug 2006

Disaster description

The discharge of lava flow from Mt. Mayon started to increase in mid July and on 4 August 2006, lava flows extended 30m beyond the 6-km radius region designated as the Permanent Danger Zone. As of 9 August, more than 39,000 people were evacuated from 25 villages near the volcano and stayed in 20 evacuation centers (mostly schools). (OCHA, 14 Aug 2006)

Alert Level 4 remained in effect by 29 August: The total number of evacuees was 6,993 families (32,758 persons) from the 26 barangays of Sto. Domingo, Daraga, Camalig, Malilipot and Guinobatan and from the cities of Legaspi, Ligao and Tabaco. Evacuees were temporarily housed in 25 evacuation centers. (Govt. of Philippines, 29 Aug 2006)
