KDP works nationwide to provide funds to rural communities so they can make poverty-reducing investments based on their own plans and management.

While in Afghanistan, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), the occupied Palestinian territory, Sri Lanka and the Sudan, women and children continue to be impacted by the reverberating crossfire of conflict.

JAKARTA, Nov 21, 2006 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- Mt. Merapi in Indonesia's Java island calmed down Tuesday morning after spewing hot clouds up to three kilometers down from its peak Monday night.

The local government in Sleman district had called on people living on the volcano's slope to increase their awareness for possible more hot clouds and floods of cold lava.

"Merapi is still in the status of alert, and we are still monitoring its development," Sleman district head Ibnu Subiyanto was quoted by the national Antara news agency as saying.

INDONESIA -CENTRAL JAVA AND YOGYAKARTA - EARTHQUAKE AND MT MERAPI VOLCANO

On 27 May, an earthquake measuring 5.9 on Richter scale struck Yogyakarta Province. The epicentre was approximately 37.2 km south of Yogyakarta at a depth of 33 kilometres. The most affected districts were Bantul and Kulonprogo south of Yogyakarta. The death toll stands at 5,778. The number of injuries stands at 37,912. 205,888 homes have been completely destroyed.

KEY DEVELOPMENTS

On June 27, the USAID Disaster Assistance Response Team (USAID/DART) departed Yogyakarta, Indonesia, having completed mission objectives to assess humanitarian needs, program emergency assistance, and coordinate the U.S. government (USG) response to the May 27 magnitude 6.3 earthquake that struck the island of Java. Deployed on May 28, the USAID/DART comprised twelve members, including specialists in health, shelter, and water and sanitation and a U.S.
