Operational context

Meeting the needs of the most vulnerable in Indonesia has continued to present a challenge for the Indonesian Red Cross (Palang Merah Indonesia/PMI) and the Federation in 2004. During the year, Indonesia suffered a number of disasters. The year started with the Federation launching an emergency appeal on 1 January, following the devastating floods in Jambi, North Sumatra during which 25,000 people were forced to leave their homes.

On July 25 2004 at 22.40 (local time) new eruption occured at the Egon volcano

Ash explosion along with rumbling sounds revealed material explosions rose up to ~ 1000-1500m above the summit. Black thick column drifted to the NW-N and sulphur gas smelt very strong. Seismograph PS-2 recorded duration of the eruptions were ~ 2 hours and 30 minutes with amplitude 30-35 mm. People on the villages spontaneously went off to the places more save but it just temporarily. The refugees going back home after the situation was normal.

A. Emergency/Disaster Situation

Egon volcano is also named Namang volcano located in Waigete and Bola Districts, Sikka Regency. The highest peak is 1703 m above sea level, has a crater of about 350 m in diameter and the crater's depth is about 200 m. In the crater base is filled by mud and dries on the dry season, whereas the solfataric activities occur on the crater wall and also on the crater rim with temperatures between 104°- 116° C. The solfataric activity is also occurred on the upper part of south slope.

ACT member CD Bethesda reports that on 29 January 2004 Mt Egon volcano (Flores Island) began ejecting lava and belching large black clouds of sulphurous ash into the atmosphere from its crater in Bola subdistrict, Sikka regency.

As of the 2nd of February, VAAC reported that Egon volcano began erupting on Thursday 29th January when it began ejecting lava and ash into the sky.
