Drought, earthquakes, floods, typhoons, volcanoes, and civil unrest, compounded by limited government response capacity in some countries, present significant challenges to vulnerable populations in the East Asia and the Pacific (EAP) region. Between FY 2008 and FY 2017, USAID’s Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance (USAID/OFDA) and USAID’s Office of Food for Peace (USAID/FFP) provided humanitarian assistance in response to a range of natural and complex emergencies in the region.
Recurrent earthquakes, floods, typhoons, and volcanoes present significant challenges to vulnerable populations in the East Asia and the Pacific (EAP) region. Some countries also face civil unrest and associated humanitarian impacts, as well as limited government capacity to respond to disasters. Between FY 2007 and FY 2016, USAID’s Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance (USAID/ OFDA) and USAID’s Office of Food for Peace (USAID/ FFP) provided humanitarian assistance in response to a diverse range of natural and complex emergencies in the region.

The government’s plan to resettle 1,903 families displaced by the 7.9-magnitude earthquake on Sept. 30, 2009, in West Sumatra, has again been delayed.
West Sumatra Manpower and Transmigration Office head Syofyan said the sluggish implementation of the resettlement program was due to the lengthy process of freeing up a 5,000-hectare forested area for new settlements.
“The permit was issued in 2013 after waiting three years,” he told The Jakarta Post on Friday.
Indonesia is located in one of the world's most disaster-prone regions, with frequent calamities such as tropical storms, floods, droughts, volcanic eruptions and earthquakes.
National authorities' management capacity has substantially improved in recent years but international assistance is sometimes still required.
The European Commission has made available € 136 million in humanitarian aid to help survivors of natural and human-made crises since 1995. This includes funding for preparedness measures through its Disaster Preparedness Programme (DIPECHO).
Around one million Indonesians are affected by natural disasters every year. Despite significant government investment in early warning systems and disaster management, the impact of the 2009 earthquake in West Sumatra showed that much more needs to be done. Oxfam’s post-earthquake advocacy work aimed to build understanding of how gender inequality shapes vulnerability and to promote women’s participation in designing the emergency response.
An Australian parliamentary delegation welcomed the progress being made on the reconstruction of facilities devastated in a 2009 earthquake in Padang, Indonesia, during a recent tour of aid programs in the region.
Australia committed nearly $19 million towards emergency relief, recovery and reconstruction efforts in West Sumatra following the earthquake, which killed more than 1,100 people and damaged or destroyed more than 300,000 buildings.

Background: On 30 September 2009, a 7.6 magnitude earthquake severely hit the coast of Padang city in West Sumatra, Indonesia leaving about 1,117 people dead and injuring another 3,515. Health consequences such as physical injury, co-morbidity, disability and quality of life over time are seldom reported among survivors after earthquakes.

DEC launches new website and publishes annual report
The DEC has today launched a new website that will help donors see how their money is being spent and encourage more giving.
The site has been built by SiftGroups and incorporates more rich media content such as video, slideshows and interactive maps. It also includes greater social media integration and the opportunity for visitors to discuss and comment on the DEC’s work.

The West Sumatra earthquake that occurred on September 30, 2009, caused severe damage in some districts, including Padang Pariaman. As Padang Pariaman is an earthquake-prone area, disaster and emergency management is necessary. Due to the limited health facilities, the health services completely rely on Puskesmas (Primary Health Centres, PHCs). This study is aimed at assessing the preparedness of PHCs to response to potential disasters in their surrounding area.

Six years after the St. Stephen's Day Asian tsunami triggered donations of €28 million from the Irish public, Trócaire has concluded its tsunami recovery programming in Indonesia.
Trócaire's work in the region has benefited over one million people through the reconstruction of homes, schools and medical clinics, as well as the delivery of water, sanitation, livelihood-support and counselling.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent (IFRC) Indonesia country office had begun preparing a five-year strategy to support the new Indonesian Red Cross (Palang Merah Indonesia/PMI) five-year strategy in 2009. Changes in the national leadership of PMI at the end of 2009 and subsequent changes in PMI national strategic priorities and policies and aspirations for their relationships with their Movement partners have delayed further refinement of this strategy. This revised appeal represents revised plans for 2011 of an initial fouryear plan.
