Tropical Cyclone Sarai - Dec 2019Ongoing
Tropical Cyclone Sarai, category 2, is located approximately 520 km west-northwest of Tonga as of 29 December 10:00 UTC. Close to its centre, the cyclone is expected to have average winds of up to 120km/h with momentary gusts up to 150 km/h. TC Sarai continues moving at about 8 km/h east-southeast towards Tongan waters on 31 December. Storm and flood warnings have been issued in Fiji with one person reported dead and one missing. It is estimated that over 2,500 people have been moved to 70 evacuation centres. The Tonga Meteorological Service has issued a heavy rain and flash flood warning for the entire country, with expected rough seas up to 4 meters. (ECHO, 29 Dec 2019)
Tropical Cyclone Sarai has been tracking through the provinces of Kadavu and Lau in Fiji as a Category 2 storm since Friday 27th December 2019. As of 30 December, Sarai is projected to move into Ha’apai, Tonga, on the first of January and track towards Niue as a Category 1 storm. In Fiji, about 2,000 people took shelter in about 70 evacuation centres. (OCHA, 31 Dec 2019)
Tropical Cyclone Sarai has gradually weakened and downgraded to a category 1 system. TC Sarai continues to move further away to the far southeast of Fiji. However, a Strong Wind Warning remains in force for land areas of Komo, Kabara, Namuka-iLau, Ogea, Fulaga, Lakeba, Oneata and Moce. (Govt. of Fiji, 31 Dec 2019)

TROPICAL CYCLONE ALERT
WARNINGS FOR LAND AREAS AND COASTAL WATERS:
A STRONG WIND AND HEAVY RAIN WARNING AND FLASH FLOOD ADVISORY REMAINS INFORCE FOR ALL OF TONGA LAND AREAS.
A STRONG WIND WARNING AND SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY REMAINS INFORCE FOR ALL OF TONGA COASTAL WATERS.
A “Storm Warning” remains in force for Vatulele, Kadavu and Matuku and is now also in force for Moala and Totoya.
A “Gale Warning” remains in force for Vanua Levu, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, Yasawa and Mamanuca Group, Viti Levu and nearby smaller islands, Lomaiviti and rest of the Lau Group.
A “Heavy Rain Warning” remains in force for the Fiji Group.
A “Flash Flood Warning” remains in force for low lying areas, small streams and areas adjacent to major rivers in the Central, Northern and Western Division.
27th December, 2019 Tropical Cyclone (TC) “SARAI” (Category 1) was located near 16.3 South latitude, 175.5 East longitude or about 260 Kilometers Northwest of Nadi, Fiji at 10am this morning. TC “SARAI” is currently moving South at about 14 Knots (28 Km/Hr) with a maximum 10-minute average winds up to 35 knots (70 Km/Hr) near its center, with momentary gusts of up to 45 knots (90 Km/Hr).
27th December, 2019 Tropical Cyclone (TC) “SARAI” has further intensified and has been upgraded to a Category 2 system at 7pm local time this evening. TC “SARAI” (Category 2) was located near 18.0 South latitude, 175.4 East longitude or about 220 Kilometers West of Nadi, Fiji at 7pm this evening. TC “SARAI” is currently moving South at about 13 Knots (26 Km/Hr) with a maximum 10-minute average winds up to 50 knots (100 Km/Hr) near its center, with momentary gusts of up to 60 knots (100 Km/Hr).
