The Minister for Health and Medical Services Hon. Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete was on hand to welcome the Fiji Emergency Medical Assistance Team (FEMAT) that returned from Kadavu after its first domestic deployment in the wake of the recent Tropical Cyclone Sarai that affected Fiji from December 27-30 2019.

A 23 member team left for Kadavu last Friday on board the Government medical boat MV Veivueti and attended to the health needs of the affected population while the support staff attended to health facility repairs at Kavala and Vunisea.

Event highlights

• The measles outbreaks in the four Pacific Island and Territories (PICs) continues, but with fewer cases reported in the last week.

• A low level of transmission continues in American Samoa, Fiji, Samoa and Tonga, but the overall situation has stabilised.

• No further measles cases have been reported from Kiribati, while monitoring and surveillance is continuing

Case update

Since the last update on December 26th, 2019 there are now 27 confirmed cases of measles. The latest confirmed cases are a 12 year old from Sakoca in Tacirua who is linked to a previous case in the same area, and a 39 year old from Nasole in Nasinu who was admitted at CWM Hospital and later discharged home.

The 3-month-old baby reported in previous updates is still admitted at CWM Hospital. All other confirmed cases have recovered or are recovering well under home isolation.

A. Situation analysis

Description of the disaster

On the 12 December, a tropical depression formed over the south-eastern part of Vanuatu approaching the Fiji group from the North West. It had picked up momentum over the last 48 hours and has developed into a Category 2 cyclone and was named Tropical Cyclone (TC) Sarai. It is projected to reach the Mamanucas and the Yasawa group on 26 December and also to increase intensity within that time period.

1st January, 2020 The Fua’amotu Tropical Cyclone Warning Center (FTCWC) officially deactivates at 12pm mid-day today. This stand down in terms of Tropical Cyclone operations of the FTCWC is based on the meteorological fact that Tropical Cyclone (TC) “SARAI” has been downgraded as of this afternoon into a low pressure system status and continues to move Southeast further away from our Tonga area of responsibility. The Tropical Cyclone Warning for Tonga regarding EX-Tropical Cyclone SARAI is now cancelled.

Tropical Cyclone Sarai has gradually weakened and downgraded to a category 1 system. TC Sarai continues to move further away to the far southeast of Fiji.

However, a Strong Wind Warning remains in force for land areas of Komo, Kabara, Namuka-iLau, Ogea, Fulaga, Lakeba, Oneata and Moce. Winds easing later today.

Meanwhile, a moderate to strong southerly wind flow prevails over the group.

The National Disaster Management Office will deploy its response team to the Island of Kadavu and Southern Lau once Tropical Cyclone Sarai exits the group.

After briefing the Prime Minister this morning, NDMO Director, Vasiti Soko says the planning team is working with other agencies to coordinate response plans from the desegregated data that was collected from the Divisional Emergency Operation Centers.

31st December, 2019 Forecast of rain and gale force winds are still in place for the whole of Tonga.

The National Emergency Management Committee this morning announced that these warnings will be in place until Cyclone Sarai is out of Tonga’s EEZ.

Chairman and Minister for MEIDECC Hon Poasi Tei said members of the public must continue to adhere to the warnings even though Sarai has been downgraded to Category 1.
