Typhoon Phanfone (locally named Ursula) made 7 landfalls on 24-25 December in the provinces of Leyte, Eastern Samar, Biliran, Iloilo, Aklan, Antique and Oriental Mindoro before exiting in the West Philippines Sea. Areas along its track experienced heavy to intense rains and strong winds and storm surges. Many of the regions affected were the same areas that were damaged by Typhoon Kammuri (Tisoy) three weeks earlier.

Coastal communities hit by Typhoon Phanfone urgently need food, clean water and shelter, Oxfam warned today. Many of the communities were still recovering from the impacts of Typhoon Kammuri which hit the areas earlier this month.

Typhoon Phanfone (known locally as Ursula) made landfall seven times between 24 and 25 December causing devastation across The Philippines.

Description of the disaster

According to the Philippines Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) Typhoon Phanfone (known locally as Typhoon Ursula) the typhoon made landfall with maximum winds of 120 kilometres per hour (km/h) and gustiness of up to 150 km/h (Category 1).
The typhoon then travelled across the country following a similar path to Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) in November 2013 making a total of seven landfalls over two days as follows:

NAVAL, Biliran, Dec. 26 (PIA) - On motion of PSWDO OIC Lissa Bermillo, Gov. Rogelio Espina, approved the move to declare the entire province of Biliran under the state of calamity after the onslaught of Typhoon Ursula.

The move was raised during the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) - Rapid Damage and Needs Assessment (RDANA) meeting held at the PDRRMC Operation Center.

At least 16 people were killed after Typhoon Phanfone left a trail of devastation and disrupted travel on Christmas Day across the central Philippines, officials said Thursday.

Packing maximum sustained winds of 195 kph (120 mph), the typhoon made landfall in Salcedo town in Eastern Samar province on Christmas Eve, according to PAGASA, the national weather agency.
