THE BPAF HAS APPEALED FOR DONATIONS TO SUPPORT HURRICANE DORIAN RECOVERY EFFORTS.

The Bahamas Protected Areas Fund (BPAF), a sister fund of the Saint Lucia National Conservation Fund (SLUNCF), has appealed for donations to support recovery efforts within The Bahamas.

The number of fatalities following Tropical Cyclone Dorian's devastating passage over the Bahamas stands at 45 but the number is expected to rise as search and rescue operations continue.

Humanitarian relief efforts continue to focus on Grand Bahama and the Abacos where approximately 3,300 are in shelters, while 4,800 people are sheltering in the capital Nassau.

In the afternoon of Sunday, 1st September 2019, Category 5 Hurricane Dorian, the strongest hurricane known this side of the Caribbean, made landfall in the Bahamas in Elbow Cay, east of Abaco island and made another landfall on Grand Bahama island with the same intensity several hours later. The hurricane moved slowly through the islands form 1 to 3 of September, leaving a death toll of 43 people as of 6th September (35 people in Abaco and 8 in Grand Bahama). This number is expected to increase due the hundreds of people still missing.

Preliminary assessments in Grand Bahama and Abaco found widespread destruction, with thousands of houses levelled, telecommunications towers down, and water wells and roads damaged.

With the arrival of evacuees in shelters in Nassau in the past days, humanitarian organizations are liaising with NEMA to support assistance to evacuees in the capital.

Humanitarians also continue to reach people remaining in Grand Bahama and Abaco. Relief assistance mostly arrives in Nassau and is dispatched to affected areas.

Singapore, 10 September 2019 - In response to the hurricane that has ravaged the Bahamas, the Singapore Red Cross (SRC) will contribute US$10,000 in relief supplies to support the emergency relief operations of the Red Cross Movement - coordinated by the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).

SRC’s contribution includes non-food items such as jerry cans, blankets, tarpaulins, kitchen sets and hygiene parcels, aimed at supporting the recovery and resilience of survivors - through shelter, healthcare, water, and sanitation.

The presentation was made on Monday, September 9, 2019 at the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, on Gladstone Road. Captain Stephen Russell, Director of NEMA accepted the cheque.
