Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen.

I am here express the solidarity of United Nations and the international community with the Government and the people of the Bahamas, after the unrelenting onslaught of Hurricane Dorian.

I bring our deepest condolences to those who have lost loved ones, and our sympathies to the many others who have lost their homes and communities.

I have just heard from Prime Minister Minnis about the Government’s comprehensive response.

OVERVIEW

35 military assets supporting the response

The Royal Bahamas Defence Forces (RBDF) are coordinating all foreign military assets through bilateral engagement and the Mil-Mil Operations Cell established in Nassau, composed of the Foreign Assisting Military States that have been cleared to assist the government of the Bahamas. A Civil-Military coordination structure has also been set up in Nassau to ensure efficient coordination between the humanitarian actors and the Military.

Nassau, Bahamas, Sept. 13, 2019—Dr. Carissa Etienne, director of the Pan American Health Organization, met with health authorities here today and offered PAHO’s full support in the relief and response operations related to Hurricane Dorian.

Her visit included meetings with Dr. The Hon. Duane E.L Sands, Minister of Health of the Bahamas, who said, “Since my time as minister I have enjoyed the mentorship, guidelines and support of PAHO’s director and we truly appreciate all the support.”

INTERNATIONAL Salvation Army disaster relief personnel and volunteers are deploying to Nassau and Freeport in the Bahamas, to assist the existing teams in those locations as they continue to serve people impacted by Hurricane Dorian. Damaris Frick, Deputy Coordinator for The Salvation Army’s International Emergency Services – who has arrived from London, UK – commends the local team for the ‘fantastic job’ undertaken so far.

The Government-led Response to Dorian is ongoing, with a highly fluid situation due to evacuations and the ongoing delivery of assistance by several entities in multiple locations and islands - numbers are changing on a daily basis. Regular assessments are required to obtain updated information on people’s needs. Nassau – The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has taken the lead, alongside the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), to assist the Ministry of Social Services and Urban Renewal with shelter coordination and management.

Through the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Government has taken the responsibility of coordinating the emergency response from its Nassau-based National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC).
