Nassau, the Bahamas: By calling the impact of Hurricane Dorian, “a generational disaster,” the Prime Minister of the Bahamas, Hubert Minnis, grasped the magnitude and gravity of the devastation that the storm left in its wake. Torrential rains, deadly winds and 22 feet surge have now given way to clear skies and calm seas. But the hurricane was the worst ever to make landfall on the Caribbean archipelago of 700 islands.

Hurricane relief and redevelopment coordinators have been appointed for Abaco and Grand Bahama, Prime Minister the Most Hon. Dr. Hubert Minnis announced on Wednesday 11 September in a national update on Hurricane Dorian relief efforts.

Mr. Jack Thompson and Mr. Algernon Cargill will lead the effort in Abaco. President of the Senate, Mrs. Kay Forbes Smith, will lead the effort in Grand Bahama.

Today, UPS (United Parcel Service) airlifted more than six metric tons of supplies from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) to The Bahamas to support the acute humanitarian needs of the people impacted by Hurricane Dorian. This generous transportation gift from UPS marks the first time USAID has coordinated on a humanitarian flight with the company.

• At the publication of this report, potential tropical storm Nine is currently stationary 304 km from Great Abaco. The National Hurricane Center calls for this system to become a tropical cyclone later today or Saturday. A tropical storm warning has been issued for Northwestern Bahamas expected to bring heavy rain and tropical force winds which might impact ongoing relief efforts.
