Mozambique (May 2, 2019) – The second catastrophic cyclone to hit Mozambique in the last six weeks touched down on April 25, causing additional devastation to an already extremely vulnerable area. Cyclone Kenneth, the strongest storm on record to hit Mozambique, made landfall as a Category 4 storm and brought a deluge of rain and flooding with it. Over the next week, the cyclone is expected to bring twice as much rain as Cyclone Idai did in March.

Northern Mozambique remains at risk for flooding following heavy rainfall from Tropical Cyclone Kenneth

  1. Seasonal rainfall deficits since October have resulted in significant dryness across Angola, Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

  2. Continued below-average rainfall and high temperatures have strengthened dryness in South Sudan, Ethiopia, Uganda, Kenya, Somalia, and Tanzania.

  3. Tropical Cylcone Kenneth made landfall over northern Mozambique last week. Heavy flooding is expected to persist into early may with continued rainfall.

Maputo/Geneva (2 May 2019) – A UN independent expert appointed by the United Nations visiting Mozambique commended the Government for its commitment and efforts made in adopting policies and legislation ensuring that older persons enjoy their rights, while stressing that action towards implementation is required. Mindful of the current emergency situation, she urged the authorities to safeguard older persons from abuse and violence.

2 May 2019, Pemba – Cyclone Kenneth, the second category 3 cyclone to hit Mozambique within five weeks, brought widespread destruction and displacement and exacerbated health risks in the north-eastern province of Cabo Delgado after making landfall on 25 April. The cyclone struck populations already vulnerable due to a fragile health system and weak water and sanitation infrastructure.
