On 22 December 2017, the monitored Low Pressure Area east of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur has developed into a Severe Tropical Storm and was named “Vinta” (international name: Tembin). It exited Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on 24 December 2017.

Status of Affected Families / Persons

165,392 families or 780,440 persons are affected in 1,153 barangays in Regions MIMAROPA, VII, IX, X, XI, XII, CARAGA, and ARMM (see Table 1; details in Annex A).

Local Caritas staff, partners and volunteers, part of the Caritas international network, are already responding with emergency assistance and support to those on the ground, following the devastating impact of Cyclone Tembin.

Cyclone Tembin 17, known locally as Typhoon Vinta, made landfall in Caraga municipality, around 254 km from Davao city, on December 24. It has devastated communities in the southern Philippines, with early reports of at least 180 people dead. Caritas Australia is contributing $50,000 AUD to the needs of affected peoples.

Situation Update
Between 22 and 26 December 2017, tropical storm Tembin caused major damage to the Island of Mindanao in Southern Philippines. More than 170 people have been killed and 176 people are reported missing. Over 540,000 people in 23 provinces have been affected and 97,583 people are staying in 261 evacuation centers. Furthermore, tropical storm Tembin has substantially impacted shelter and livelihoods and caused damage to crops and critical infrastructure including roads, bridges and power transmission lines.
