Background

During the week of September 5- September 9, category 5 Hurricane Irma caused destruction on multiple Caribbean islands. St. Martin/St. Maarten, Antigua and Barbuda, and Turks and Caicos experienced heavy wind and rain damage. After Hurricane Irma, Hurricane Maria moved through the Caribbean causing damage to islands such as Dominica and Puerto Rico. St. Martin/St. Maarten, and Antigua and Barbuda experienced less damage from Hurricane Maria due to the storm’s southward position.

Saturday, September 23, 2017 — The Government of New Zealand has announced that it is contributing NZ$250,000 to the immediate relief efforts for Caribbean countries affected by Hurricanes Irma and Maria. The funding will be disbursed through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to support governments in early recovery activities such as debris management and rehabilitation of basic services such as water and electricity.

Estos desastres se han cobrado muchas vidas, han causado miles de millones de dólares en daños a hogares, negocios e infraestructuras.

September 23, 2017 These past few weeks have been extremely difficult for several OAS Member States who have been hit by 3 hurricanes in quick succession - Harvey, Irma and Maria. They have affected several islands in the Caribbean, especially Barbuda, in the twin-island state of Antigua and Barbuda, and the Commonwealth of Dominica, Puerto Rico, Florida and large parts of Houston, in the United States. These disasters have claimed many lives and caused billions of dollars of damage to homes, businesses, and infrastructure.

New York, 22 September - Governments in several Caribbean countries are starting to rebuild infrastructures, houses and communities with UNDP’s on the ground support after Hurricane Irma left catastrophic damage in several countries.

After experiencing a few days of delay due to the passage of Hurricane Maria, the Government of Barbuda kicked off debris removal efforts on 21 September, with technical support from UNDP to build back better, as part of a UN-wide humanitarian-development strategy.

The Royal Navy’s flagship HMS Ocean has arrived in the British Virgin Islands to support those affected by Hurricane Irma and Maria.

The ship arrived today with around 650 personnel and 60 tonnes of aid including construction equipment and other essential materials such as hygiene kits and water purification tablets.

Ocean’s arrival means there are now over 2,000 UK military personnel working on the relief effort, making it the largest deployment of UK personnel anywhere in the world.
