Wednesday, January 17, 2018– The Cabinet of the Virgin Islands has approved the expenditure of $442,000 to allow for the release of immediate funds to re-establish the National Early Warning System.

Governor Augustus Jaspert said the Premier and Members of his Cabinet have met and received an indication of what will be needed to bring the system back to a fully functional state.

Havana, 1 December 2017 -- Switzerland government is providing 1.9 million Swiss francs (1.93 million dollars) to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the World Food Programme (WFP) to support Cuban families affected by Hurricane Irma. The funds will be used for housing rehabilitation and emergency food assistance for the most vulnerable groups of the population reaching about 660 thousand people.

As at end December 2017, UN-coordinated appeals and refugee response plans within the Global Humanitarian Overview (GHO) required US$24.7 billion to meet the humanitarian needs of 105.1 million crisis-affected people in 38 countries. Together the appeals were funded at $13.8 billion, or 54% of requirements. Funding for the appeals in 2017 fell 46% short of requirements, with $10.9 billion outstanding.

Camagüey.— En esta provincia se han recuperado más de 10 200 viviendas, del total de 43 300 afectadas por el huracán Irma, informó Isabel González Cárdenas, presidenta de la Asamblea Provincial del Poder Popular.

Apuntó que en la costa norte agramontina, sobre todo en los municipios de Esmeralda, Sierra de Cubitas, Nuevitas y Minas, donde el huracán fue más inclemente, así como en el resto de las localidades, la recuperación no se detiene.

Elderly homes on Tortola and Virgin Gorda will soon undergo needed emergency repairs to their structures which sustained extensive damage following the passage of hurricanes Irma and Maria.

The repair works are being funded by the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) Health Emergency Department and will seek to achieve the Smart Health Care Facilities standards thereby reducing operating costs and making the facilities safer for residents and staff.

The steering committee established to spearhead the recovery process of countries hit by Hurricanes Irma and Maria, in September of 2017, have been moving ahead in the venture, information coming out from the CARICOM Secretariat stated.

Following the successful staging of the CARICOM-UN High-Level Pledging Conference at UN Headquarters in New York on November 21, 2017, the Steering Committee has continued to meet with a renewed focus on translating pledges into concrete programmes and initiatives.

Hurricanes Irma and Maria: health sector response

In the space of one month, several nations of the Caribbean were ravaged by two category 5 hurricanes packing winds of up to 160 mph (260 km/h). Hurricane Irma passed through 11 islands in the Caribbean starting on 5 September 2017, followed a week later by Hurricane Maria, which impacted six islands, including three in Puerto Rico, Turks and Caicos, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, that had already been hit by Irma. The total population of the islands is 37.2 million people.
