SITUATION OVERVIEW

Less than a year after the impact of Hurricane Matthew, and in a context of an intense drought, the strongest hurricane ever reported in the Atlantic hit Cuba for more than 72 hours, from September 8th-10th, with 240-250 km/h winds and even stronger gusts, coastal inundation and waves of up to 9 meters.

BRIDGETOWN, BARBADOS — Hurricane Maria has intensified into an extremely dangerous Category 4 hurricane on the five-step Saffir-Simpson wind scale and is expected to strengthen further, the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) said on Monday.

Hurricane Maria was about 35 miles (55 km) northeast of Martinique, with maximum sustained winds of 130 miles per hour (215 km per hour), the Miami-based weather forecaster said.

The First Secretary of State, Damian Green, chaired a COBR meeting this afternoon to discuss the Government’s response to Hurricane Irma and preparations for Hurricane Maria.

We remain concerned that Hurricane Maria, which is strengthening as it approaches the Leeward Islands, could hit the UK’s Overseas Territories in the Caribbean already affected as well as Montserrat.

FCO, DFID and military teams are working closely with the Governors in the Overseas Territories to ensure we are doing all we can to support the Governments of the islands affected.

This map illustrates satellite detectedpotentially damaged buildings in Cockburn island following the landfall of Tropical Cyclone IRMA-17 on 11 September 2017. UNITAR-UNOSAT analysis used a Pleiades satellite image acquired on 15 September 2017 as post imagery. We identified 400 potentially damaged structures within the analyzed area. According to the pre-building footprints provided by Humanitarian Open Street Map, this represents ~51% of the total number of structures in Cockburn island. This is a preliminary analysis and has not yet been validated in the field.
