DFID field teams arrived on the island yesterday (20 September) to carry out a three day assessment of the impact of the Category 5 hurricane.

Initial reports suggest widespread destruction, with 90% of buildings damaged or destroyed.

Dialysis service damaged, and the electricity is down. Seven deaths have been reported on the island due to the storm.

  • The hurricane made landfall on Puerto Rico around 6 AM today, bringing catastrophic flash flooding. Before Hurricane Maria made landfall, there were 172 shelters housing 9,981 occupants.

Hurricanes Irma and Maria have brought widespread destruction to the Caribbean. Trevor Queeley, from the Anguilla Red Cross, says Maria is delaying the aid effort, but his teams are eager to get back to helping people.

Bogotá (sep. 20/17). El gobierno colombiano envió este miércoles a Cuba una donación en especie para apoyar las labores de atención humanitaria de las poblaciones afectadas por el paso del huracán Irma, el pasado 9 de septiembre.

La delegación colombiana, encabezada por la Embajadora de Colombia en Cuba, Araceli Morales, y el Director de la Unidad Nacional para la Gestión del Riego de Desastres - UNGRD, Carlos Iván Márquez, entregó 500 kits alimentarios, 500 kits de aseo, 1500 frazadas y 1500 sábanas.
