ANTANANARIVO – En appui au Gouvernement de Madagascar, le Programme Alimentaire Mondial (PAM) a commencé, ce 11 mars, une assistance de vivres d’urgence à 20,000 personnes déplacées et accueillies dans des sites d’hébergement temporaire à Antananarivo, suivant le passage du cyclone ENAWO.

This map illustrates satellite-detected water extent as of 10 March 2017 over Antsahanoro commune, Antalaha district in Madagascar as detected by TerraSAR-X. As of 10 March 2017, ~ 335 Ha of land over Antsahanoro commune seem to be inundated and have experienced an increase of standing waters. These zones are mainly agricultural and/or swamps in the commune of Antsahanoro. These waters seem to be the results of the recent heavy rain related also to the cyclone ENAWO-17 which made landfall the 07 March 2017.

Response activities by the Government and humanitarian partners continue to scale up. Relief items were pre-positioned in 15 regions ahead of Cyclone Enawo’s arrival to respond to food security, education, health, nutrition, shelter, water and sanitation, and protection needs. Additional supplies started to be deployed to Sava and Analanjirofo regions on 10 March 2017.

Update

The number of people displaced by the cyclone has risen to almost 247,000. Some 425,000 people have been severely affected by the disaster and require humanitarian assistance.

ANTANANARIVO, March 14 (Reuters) - Vanilla producers on the tropical island of Madagascar say a cyclone that killed 78 people has also damaged around 30 percent of the crop in the world's biggest producer.

The valuable beans are often kept under armed guard after prices shot up from around $20 a kg in 2010 to around $500 a kg last year.

En date du 7 mars 2017, le cyclone Enawo, classé de catégorie 4, a frappé la capitale de Madagascar, Antananarivo, avec des rafales de vent allant jusqu’à 300 km/h. Il s'agit du plus puissant cyclone qui touche la Grande île depuis le cyclone Giovanna en 2012.

Des milliers de gens se retrouvent sinistrés et nécessiteront une aide d’urgence dans les semaines à venir.
