Cyclone Yasi - Jan 2011

Disaster description

Tropical Cyclone Yasi passed between the Banks and Torres Islands groups in the northern Torba province of Vanuatu on 30 January 2011. Food sources were affected as almost all root crops and fruit trees were destroyed in most of the communities in the Torres and Banks Island groups. Water tanks - the islands’ main source of water - were contaminated by debris. In the Torres group, 60 dwellings, three classrooms and a community hall were destroyed. (OCHA, 2 Feb 2011)
