Typhoon Chanthu - Jul 2010
Disaster description
On 17 July 2010, the Philippines Government reported an Active Low Pressure Area (ALPA) east of the country’s Aurora Province (Govt, 17 Jul 2010). The ALPA caused heavy rains and strong winds across the province, which triggered flash floods in six Barangays of Dinalan and one Barangay in Baler. A total of 235 families in the Philippines were affected. By 20 July, the ALPA had crossed Luzon into the South China Sea and intensified into a Tropical Storm named Chanthu (known locally as Caloy) (Govt, 20 Jul 2010). Chanthu went on to make landfall in China’s Guangdong Province on 22 July (Xinhua, 23 Jul 2010), killing two people and affecting at least 1.36 million people across the province (IFRC, 26 Jul 2010). Its effects were also felt in Viet Nam, with flash floods and landslides reported in Lao Cai, Ha Giang, Yen Bai, Son La and Lai Chau Provinces (Govt, 26 Jul 2010). Ha Giang was the hardest hit province, with seven locals reported dead, followed by two in Cao Bang and one Lao Cai. (Govt, 26 Jul 2010)
