Typhoon Koppu - Sep 2009

The Philippines: On 12 September 2009 10:00 AM, the Low Pressure Area (LPA) East of Southern Luzon developed into a Tropical Depression and was named "NANDO" [international name "KOPPU"]. A total of 9,731 families/48,330 persons were affected in 39 bangarays of 10 municipalities in Regions I, II and CAR (Cagayan, Cavite, Laguna and Kalinga). Typhoon Koppu brought strong wind and heavy rain to Hong Kong but caused no serious casualties or damage. The Drainage Services Department received eight reports of flooding - two each in Kowloon, Yuen Long and Sha Tin, one on outlying islands and one in Sai Kung; the Islands District Office had activated an emergency command centre and set up two shelters where 10 residents took temporary accommodation. 58 people, aged nine to 78, sought medical treatment at public hospitals; most sustained minor injuries due to falling objects. China: As of 17 September 2009, more than 1.44 million local residents in 287 townships in the Guangdong were affected by the typhoon. Death toll reached nine, caused by typhoon-triggered mud-rock flows, landslides, house collapses and flooding, according to Guangdong Flooding and Drought Relief Headquarters. More than 1,250 houses in Yangchun, Xinyi and Luoding cities were destroyed. (Xinhua, 17 Sep 2009)
