
Tropical Storm Mujigae - Sep 2009
Disaster description
Philippines: At 4:00 AM, September 09, 2009, Tropical Depression “Maring” (international name Mujigae) was located 230 km West Northwest of Dagupan City. The prevailing southwest monsoon and effects of the tropical depression triggered the occurrence of landslides, a tornado, maritime incidents and widespread flooding across the country. A total of 87,202 families (388,373 persons) were affected in 385 barangays of 34 municipalities and two cities in Region III (Zambales, Pampanga, Bulacan and Bataan); Region IV-A (Laguna) and Region IV-B (Occ Mindoro). There were 1,425 families housed in 12 evacuation centers on 12 September 2009. (Govt. of the Philippines, 12 Sep 2009)
Viet Nam: Whirlwinds and floods have killed seven people, injured nine and left six others missing in the central region and Central Highlands. The natural disaster caused hundreds of billions of Vietnamese dong in damage, according to the Centre for Flood and Storm Control in the Central Region and Central Highlands. More than 1,500 dwellings were either submerged or destroyed. Additionally, almost 15,000 ha of rice fields and over 10,000 ha of other food crops were inundated and 507 ha of industrial crops were destroyed. (Govt. of Viet Nam, 11 Sep 2009)
China: More than 163,600 people were evacuated in southern Hainan, Guangdong and Guangxi and no injuries and deaths were reported by 11 September 2009 as tropical storm Mujigae landed in south China. The office of the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters reported that 39,600 people were relocated and about 26,100 fishing boats returned to harbors in Hainan Province. About 103,000 people were evacuated and 38,600 fishing boats returned in Guangdong Province, and 21,000 people were evacuated and 9,500 fishing boats returned to harbor in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
