PHILIPPINES: RESPONDING TO NEEDS FOLLOWING TYPHOON

UMCOR Philippines is at work in Botolan after two typhoons hit the area. According to Ciony Eduarte who manages UMCOR's office in the Philippines, people have been relocated to safer areas as flash flooding resulting from a damaged dam and overfilled rice fields continue to create hazardous conditions.

UMCOR is assisting with emergency response, distributing food in the affected areas in coordination with the district superintendent and KKFI,.

PHILIPPINES: TYPHOON RESPONSE

UMCOR's Philippine office which opened at the end of July is already in full swing providing assistance after two typhoons struck Zambales, a province in the Central Luzon region of the country. UMCOR staff members are assessing the situation with local partners including Kapaatiran-Kaunlaran Foundation Inc. (KKFI), formerly the Methodist Social Center, an organization the works with the poor.

PHIVOLCS-DOST conducted Rapid Earthquake Damage Assessment System (REDAS) trainings for three provinces as part of the third component of the READY Project. In this component, the REDAS software which was originally developed by PHIVOLCS for earthquake emergency response, is now being used as a tool to mainstream disaster risk reduction into the local development process under the READY Project.

PHILIPPINES: UMCOR OPENS NEW OFFICE

UMCOR will open an office in the Philippines on July 24 to help bring relief to a population vulnerable to natural disasters, civil conflict and extreme poverty. Based on the campus of Union Theological Seminary in Cavite, about 50 miles south of Manila, UMCOR Philippines will serve as the communications hub between United Methodist conferences within the Philippines and the US.

Heavy rains occurred in (locos Norte affecting 4 municipalities and 1 city due to flooding. Some major roads rendered impassable due to high floodwater level

CAR

As a result of continuous rains, soil erosion occurred in Brgy. Poblacion, Mankayan, Benguet near the perimeter fence of Mankayan Elementary School and National High School. Classes in Mankayan Elementary School were temporarily transferred to a safer area
