Typhoon Mekkhala - Sep 2008

Disaster description

Tropical Storm Mekkhala swept through central Vietnam on Tuesday, killing three people and leaving 14 missing and 13 injured, the National Steering Committee for Storm and Flood Control said Wednesday [1st October 2008]. (DPA, 1 Oct 2008)

Thailand: Si Sa Ket distributed survival bags and dried foods to help more than 1,600 floods victims today after Typhoon Mekhla wreaked havoc to the area. 1,694 households in 47 villages were affected by the storm since September 29. (Govt. of Thailand, 1 Oct 2008)

Some 12 provinces in the northern mountainous region of Vietnam were badly hit by subsequent disasters: typhoon Kammuri (August), flash floods following typhoon Hagupit (end September), and typhoon Mekkhala (end September). Typhoon Mekkhala landed in the north-central part of Vietnam on 30 September, causing heavy rain and strong winds in five provinces (Ha Tinh, Thanh Hoa, Quang Binh, Quang Tri and Thua Thien Hue). Although the storm reduced in strength, it left a trail of destruction in its wake, overwhelming limited provincial resources stretched by other disasters. (IFRC, 3 Oct 2008)
