Countries in the Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) region are highly vulnerable to a range of natural hazards, including droughts, earthquakes, forest fires, floods, hurricanes, and volcanic eruptions. Between FY 2007 and FY 2016, USAID’s Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance (USAID/ OFDA) and USAID’s Office of Food for Peace (USAID/ FFP) provided humanitarian assistance in response to a diverse range of natural disasters in the region.

Des puits à pompes manuelles sont en cours de forage dans trois communes rurales proches de Saint-Marc (Artibonite), afin d’améliorer l’accès à l’eau pour 5 000 personnes.

Cinq ans après les catastrophes naturelles qui avaient dévasté la Cité de l’Indépendance, Gonaïves renait. Asphaltage des rues, construction de canaux et de ponceaux : depuis octobre 2012, la ville est un véritable chantier. De nouvelles infrastructures qui embellissent les quartiers, mais également favorisent le petit commerce.

Les mairies des Coteaux et de Chardonnières emménageront bientôt dans de nouveaux bâtiments qui permettront à la fois de créer de meilleures conditions de travail et d’améliorer l’efficacité des institutions publiques.

« Les retombées de ces projets sont doubles », assure Jean-Max Lajoie, maire principal de Chardonnières, « l’amélioration des conditions de travail des employés et la restauration de l’image de l’Etat ». En effet, les habitants fréquentent avec réticence l’administration en raison de l’aspect de ses locaux, explique-t-il.

Débutés à la mi-août, trois projets d’infrastructures financés par la Section Réduction de la Violence Communautaire (RVC) de la MINUSTAH, mis en œuvre par l’Organisation Internationale pour les Migrations (OIM), transforment progressivement la Cité de l’Indépendance.

"When the waters came, my six children and I were swept away more than 50 meters from our house," says Jésula Jean Pierre, 46, a resident of Gonaives remembering Hur-ricane Hanna that hit the city two years ago in September 2008. "This is a country acutely exposed to hurricanes at the best of times," said Sarah Muscroft, Head of the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Haiti. "With so many people still so vulnerable after the recent earthquake, a serious hurricane this year could be devastating.

May 26 2010-Hurricane Hannah - sweeping through the Caribbean in September 2008 - left the Haitian town of Gonaives with a few surprises - a brand new lake - slap in the middle of what had formerly been a dry plain between desolate mountains - and a sharp increase in malaria, typhoid, skin rashes and various food- and water-borne diseases. Even as teams sloughed away truckfuls of mud, the health of the community threatened to succomb to the terrible sanitary conditions.
