Pledges & contributions

The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) is pleased to acknowledge the receipt of seven new contributions totalling $13,868,771.89 as of 1 June. The contributions were made by Armenia ($5,000), Belgium ($2,988,913.90), Finland ($6,726,000), Hungary ($10,000), Israel ($15,000), Switzerland ($4,113,857.99), and the non-governmental organization (NGO) Humanity First ($10,000). New pledges were announced by Austria ($409,836) and Italy ($1,289,482.50) for 2007.

Tropical Cyclone Update:

As we approach the end of the tropical cyclone season, it is appropriate to review this past season. As of this date, we have had 23 numbered cyclones in the South Indian Ocean compared with the average number of 27. None of the tropical cyclones impacted mainland Africa and only one, Boloeste, impacted Madagascar.

HIGHLIGHTS
Regional: Some areas in the region are receiving too much or too little rain, but generally conditions for agriculture remain positive, allowing for some cautious optimism. Early season crops are starting to take off the sharp edges of the peak of the hunger season. A recent mission of the Special Envoy concluded however that the triple threat remains relevant.

AVAILABLE DATA DOES NOT JUSTIFY ISSUANCE OF NUMBERED TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNINGS AT THIS TIME. WINDS IN THE AREA ARE ESTIMATED TO BE 30 TO 35 KNOTS. METSAT IM=AD AGERY AT 091730Z INDICATES THAT A CIRCULATION CENTER IS LOCATED NEAR 16.2S 171.6W. THE SYSTEM IS MOVING SOUTHEASTWARD AT 05 KNOTS.

There is a weak to moderate tilt in the odds favoring above normal rainfall locally over western Mauritania, west central Mali, northern Burkina Faso, and locally over western Niger. A slight to moderate tilt of the odds toward below normal rainfall exists locally over southwestern Mali and central Chad.
