Hurricane Watch Issued For Most Of Florida; Tropical Storm Alpha Forms

Heavy rain from Hurricane Wilma's outer bands battered parts of Florida on Saturday as residents streamed out of the Keys under a mandatory evacuation order and forecasters announced a hurricane watch for the state's entire southern peninsula.

At the same time, a record 22nd tropical storm of the season formed about 125 miles off the Dominican Republic, Tropical Storm Alpha.

Category 4 Hurricane Wilma Hits Yucatan - Florida Threatened

The center of Hurricane Wilma has been relentlessly pounding the areas of Cancun and Cozumel on Yucatan peninsula, Mexico Saturday morning with wind speeds near 140 mph with higher gusts. At 5:00 a.m. EDT, the storm's winds have decreased near 125 mph and some additional weakening is expected today while Wilma is over land.

The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) is reporting that the water levels are rising in the community of New River in St. Elizabeth. According to the St. Elizabeth Parish Disaster Coordinator, eight houses have been flooded and four families have evacuated to friends and relatives. The St. Elizabeth Parish Disaster Committee will however continue to monitor the situation.

The Wanstead Main Road leading into New River is now inundated and is inaccessible.
