The Foreign Office today sent a 10-man consular Rapid Deployment Team (RDT) to Mexico from the UK, to assist British nationals in distress in the aftermath of Hurricane Wilma. The team consists of Foreign Office consular officials, plus staff from the British Red Cross and International SOS.

This is in addition to the 15-strong consular team already on the ground in Cancun, which includes the British Ambassador to Mexico, the Consul General, the UK's Defence Attache, and a consular team drawn from across the region.

HAVANA, Oct 24, 2005 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- Torrential rains triggered by Hurricane Wilma caused flooding, which reached over one meter high on some roads in coastal Cuba, and knocked out electricity in much of the capital Havana, the Cuban meteorological authorities said Monday.

Monday, October 24,2005,ORLANDO - Hurricane Wilma made landfall Monday morning near Cape Romano in Collier County at 6:30 a.m., as a Category 3 storm with winds around 110 mph, taking out roofs, trees and power lines along the way.

Reports of damage are incomplete at this time as the storm is still moving across the state, and damage assessments are delayed until it passes completely. By 9 a.m., Wilma fell to a Category 2 storm, but just barely, and still sustained significant winds with reports of major flooding.

Hurricane Wilma, the 21st named hurricane of the 2005 hurricane season, has left a trail of destruction across the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. Yucatan and Quintana Roo are the most affected areas.

After two days of high winds and rain, trees, electric and telephone lines are down, buildings have collapsed and many areas are cut off by blocked roads. Petrol stations are either closed or damaged. At least four people are thought to have died.

Un nuevo contingente, integrado por 425 médicos, ha sido movilizado para atender a los damnificados por el huracán Stan, informó el doctor Lisandro Morán, de Recursos Humanos del Ministerio de Salud P=FAblica y Asistencia Social (MSPAS).
