SITUATION:

Hurricane Emily hit Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula yesterday after causing damage in Jamaica and Grenada. While the storm made landfall as a Category 4 hurricane, it later weakened as it moved across the peninsula to a Category 1 hurricane with 90 mph winds and is now expected to make landfall along the northern gulf coast of Mexico early Wednesday.

The worst damage on the Yucatan Penninsula was in Puerto Aventuras where the storm's eye came ashore 60 miles south of Cancun. So far, no deaths have been reported as a result of the Hurricane in Mexico.

Hurricane Emily hit Mexico's Yucatan peninsula early Monday, July 18, 2005. The hurricane's center was just southwest of Cozumel island, a popular tourist area. Most of the tourists were evacuated as the storm drew closer on Sunday. Emily weakened to a Category 2 storm as it passed over the Yucatan.

Stan DeVoogd, PC(USA) Liaison for Mexico, noted that there is flooding in the cities. We are reminded that during the past year, Mexico has been gripped by drought that resulted in the loss of crops and cattle.

The entire Jamaica is now breathing a sigh of relief having again being spared the wrath of another major hurricane.

Hurricane Emily, a dangerous category four system, was heading for the island last week before veering south, sparing the country a direct hit.

But even though the island escaped the worst effects of the hurricane, torrential showers and thunderstorms occurred in the central and western end of the island and sections of eastern parishes, producing flash floods and landslides.

En este momento quisiera dirigirme a la Nación entera para dar este mensaje, lo cual comenzaría yo por un reconocimiento y una felicitación a la población civil, a los ciudadanos de Quintana Roo y de Yucatán, que con gran madurez y sentido de responsabilidad han sabido manejar esta situación, evitando todo problema relacionado con pérdidas de vida o con accidentes. Esto es verdaderamente importante señalarlo.
