Typhoon Sally - Sep 1996
Disaster description
On 11 September 1996, the Chinese Ministry of Civil Affairs provided the following information on the impact of typhoon Sally which made landfall at the coastal areas of Wuchuan city, Guangdong province, in the morning of 9 September 1996. The typhoon caused damage and loss of life in southwestern Guangdong and southeastern Guangxi provinces. According to initial statistics, the death toll is 147, with more than 5,000 injured and 50 missing. 272,000 houses were destroyed and 1,220,000 were damaged. 15 million people as well as 680,000 hectares of crops were affected. Highways, telecommunication facilities, dikes and dams suffered severe damage. (UN DHA, 12 Sep 1996)
