Typhoon Angela - Nov 1995

Disaster description

The Joint Typhoon Warning Center, Guam, reports that as of 1500 UTC Typhoon Angela was located near latitude 14.1 north, longitude 123.9 east, moving west towards the Philippines. Maximum sustained winds have increased to 155 knots/hr. Typhoon Angela has maintained its intensity but is expected to weaken when it makes landfall over the Luzon populated region, namely the Capital Manila, sometime tomorrow morning (local time), 3 November 1995. According to UNDP office in manila, the areas of Camarines and Sorsogon, in the eastern part of the Luzon region, have already been hit by Typhoon Angela. Unconfirmed information indicates substantial damage, massive flooding, power lines down and road network disrupted. (UN DHA, 2 Nov 1995)

On 3 November Typhoon Angela (maximum sustained winds of 205 km per hour and gusts of up to 250 km per hour) affected 25 provinces, including the national capital region in Luzon, 13 cities and 149 municipalities. Casualties confirmed: 62 dead, 10 missing and 23 injured. A total of 75,641 families or almost 450,000 people affected. Damage to housing: 25,244 destroyed, 12,551 partially damaged. UNDP/DHA Resident Representative and National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) reported confirmed casualties as of 5:00 am, 6 November 1995: 490 dead, 190 missing and 2,801 injured. A total of 226,717 families or 1,152,397 persons affected, with 120,704 families or 636,645 persons evacuated in 1,058 evacuation centres. Damage to housing: 47,435 destroyed, 49,226 partially damaged. Damage to crops estimated at PHP 1,072.319 million (USD 41.4 million) and damage to infrastructure estimated at PHP 1,105.835 million (USD 42.7 million). The amounts are expected to increase as further reports are received. (UN DHA, 6 Nov 1995)

DHA/UN Resident Coordinator And National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) reported confirmed casualties as of 5:00 pm, 13 November 1995: 722 dead, 160 missing and 2,369 injured. A total of 331,205 families or 1,597,219 persons affected. 24,892 families or 137,854 persons are still evacuated in 718 evacuation centres. Damage to housing: 147,999 destroyed, 388,033 partially damaged. Damage to crops is estimated at PHP 3,393.773 million (USD 131 million) and damage to infrastructure estimated at PHP 2,917.179 million (USD 113 million). The NDCC through the local disaster coordinating councils continues relief operations in the affected areas. Department of Social Welfare And Development (DSWD) reports to have assisted 79,084 families or 419,052 persons in evacuation centres. Estimated cost of assistance totalled PHP 10.1 million (USD 395,000). (UN DHA, 14 Nov 1995)
