Tropical Storm Yunya - Jul 1994

Disaster description

Tropical Storm Yunya hit northern Philippines 19-20 July with maximum sustained winds of 55 kms per hour and heavy rains. Heavy rains caused flooding in wide areas of Pampanga, Bulacan, Bataan, Zambales and Tarlac. Series of secondary explosions of pyroclastic deposits from Mt. Pinatubo caused heavy ashfall in Pampanga. Rains also triggered heavy flows of lahar from Mt. Pinatubo. Major roads and bridges cut by floods and lahar flows. Preliminary reports indicate 9 dead, 1 missing and 5 injured. Department of Social Welfare and Development reports that at least 35,711 are affected. 1,011 families have been evacuated. (UN DHA, 20 Jul 1994)

Heavy rains generated by Tropical Storm Yunya have caused widespread flooding in Ilocos Sur, Pampanga, Tarlac, Bataan, Bulacan, Zambales, Olongapo and Angeles. As of 20 July, national disaster coordinating council reported 10 people dead, 7 injured, 1 missing. 420,721 people affected. 54 houses totally destroyed, 175 partially damaged. Lahar flows from mt. Pinatubo have caused extensive damage to crops, fishponds, river dikes, and anti-lahar works. Preliminary estimates indicate direct losses at USD 37.6 million. (UN DHA, 27 Jul 1994)
