HAVANA, Nov 14, 2001 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- Two planes from Russia have reached the Cuban capital of Havana with humanitarian assistance for the Caribbean nation, which has been hit by the devastating hurricane Michelle, the Cuban official daily Granma reported on Wednesday.

The two aircraft, loaded with food for children, canned meat, milk, rice and glass for windows and doors, were sent by the Russian Civil Defense and Emergency Situations Ministry and landed at Havana's Jose Marti International Airport.

Poco después del mediodía y con media hora de diferencia entre una y otra, arribaron al aeropuerto internacional José Martí ambas naves, con sus cargas de alimentos para niños, carnes en conserva, arroz, leche condensada y cristales para puertas y ventanas.

Los amigos franceses pertenecen a la CGT, una organización progresista que desde 1996 oficializó su hermanamiento con los trabajadores eléctricos cienfuegueros y juntos han desarrollado numerosas iniciativas motivadas por la amistad y el bien com=FAn.

The OPEC Fund for International Development today approved an emergency assistance grant of $200,000 to help procure relief supplies for victims of Hurricane Michelle which struck the Caribbean region on November 4, causing tremendous damage, particularly in Honduras and Cuba.

In Honduras, Michelle dumped nearly two feet of rain causing some of the worst flooding seen since Hurricane Mitch struck in 1998. In addition to fatalities, over 7,000 people have been evacuated and more than 1,200 homes destroyed.

La Comisión Permanente de Contingencias, COPECO, informa que los reportes emanados del Servicio Meteorológico Nacional indican que un sistema de Baja Presión en interacción con el Frente Frío ubicado en el Atlántico Norte han generado desde el día de ayer continuas lluvias en la zona norte del país y de acuerdo a los pronósticos las mismas se intensificarán el día de mañana y se prolongarán por lo menos 48 horas más.

Geneva, 9 November, 2001 - Cuba and other countries in the Caribbean were hit by Hurricane Michelle on Sunday 4 November, leaving an extensive damage, and losses of crops and properties. Cuban Civil Defense reported that the hurricane killed 5 people in Cuba, damaged nearly1, 600 buildings and destroyed 20,000 tons of citrus crops. "The devastation is incredible" said Nohemi Gorrín, the co-ordinator of the emergency committee of the Cuban Council of Churches. She and the President of the Council, Reiniero Arce, visited the most affected areas earlier this week.
