Northwest Medical Teams will send two 40-foot containers of medical supplies and food to Moldova, where the severest ice storms since World War II have broken power lines and poles. One million people in the northern third of the country are without power, heat or water. Electricity won't be restored until March 2001, despite assistance from those countries neighboring Moldova, one of the former republics of the United Soviet Socialist Republic (USSR).

BEIJING (Dec. 18) XINHUA - The Red Cross Society of China has donated 20,000 U.S. dollars each to Niger and Moldova for disaster relief.

The donations were passed on to Red Cross societies of Niger and Moldova through the Chinese embassies in the two countries.

Niger has suffered from drought this year, which resulted in poor harvest and one-third of the country's population is in urgent need of food. Moldova suffered from heavy rain in November and the country thus experienced unusual frost.

The parliament on 8 December approved adding 30 million lei ($2.42 million) to the expenditures of the 2001 budget, to pay for the damage caused by the extreme frost experienced from 26-28 November. This increases the budget deficit. The World Bank, Romania, Russia, Belarus, and China have announced relief measures to help Moldova overcome the consequences of the disaster. MS

The rain and the frost from November 26-28, 2000 caused essential damages to the economy of the Republic of Moldova. Such a calamity has never been registered in the country's history. In 546 communities have been deteriorated electric power network distribution which is almost 2500 km and 35863 pillars. Telecommunication network has been damaged on a length of 450 km and about a thousand of pillars is destroyed. In some districts' communities which have been seriously affected such as Soroca, Edinet, Orhei, Balti, Ungheni need complete recovery works of the energetic system.
