Typhoon Faith - Dec 1998

Disaster description

Typhoon Faith with winds gusting up to 150 km per hour, hit the Philippines end of last week. The UN Resident Coordinator in Manila indicated that an official report on the damage caused by the typhoon had been issued by the National Disaster Coordinating Council, Department of National Defense, on 15 December 1998 as follows: Dead: 8, Injured: 5, Missing: 17, Provinces affected: 17, Displaced populations: 9,214 families or 51,785 people, Evacuation centers: 135, Evacuated people: 3,360 families or 20,419 people, Damage to agriculture and infrastructure: 513.95 million pesos (USD 13 million). The affected provinces are Bulacan, Quezon, Mindoro Occidental, Palawan, Masbate, Samar, Biliran, Leyte, Albay, Sorsogon, Catanduanes, Aklan, Capiz, Antique, Iloilo, Guimaras, Negros Occidental. Damage to infrastructure includes disconnected roads, collapsed bridges, disruption of telephone lines, power supply and water supply systems. According to reports from the Disaster Management Unit/Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in Vietnam, the typhoon ravaged through Vietnam on 16 December, causing damage in Khanh Hoa, Bin Dinh and several other central and coastal provinces.
