Tropical Cyclone 03A - Jun 1998

Disaster description

On 9 June 1998, a cyclone hit the coastal regions of the western Indian state of Gujarat. The UN Resident Coordinator in New Delhi reported today that, as per official information, the cyclone has affected 12 districts of Gujarat State. A total of 206 people have been killed and 210 injured and hospitalised. [...] In Kutch district 3 camps have been established in which 2,050 evacuated persons are sheltered. In Jamnagar district 15 camps are sheltering 4,950 persons and in Junagadh district 2 camps are sheltering 100 persons. (OCHA, 10 Jun 1998)

The UN Resident Coordinator in New Delhi informs that, according to latest newspaper reports, the total death toll in Kutch-Saurashtra region of Gujarat is rising alarmingly. The Minister of State for Home, Mr. Haren Pandya said that 1,126 bodies have been recovered until 18 June and the death toll could be as high as 3,000. About 1,745 persons are still missing and 893 are reported injured. A total of 5,853 animals have been reported lost. 4.60 million people have been affected and 158,000 houses/huts damaged. Financial loss is estimated at Rs. 120 billion (about US Dollars 3.01 billion). In addition, in Rajasthan District, 11 persons died, 6,295 animals have been lost and 14,603 houses/huts damaged.
