Fiji: Cyclone Gavin - Mar 1997

Disaster description

Cyclone Gavin which struck Fiji on 7 March did not cause as much damage as originally feared. The Yasawa Island Group and the northwest coast of Viti Levu were the most severely affected areas. The Director General of the Fiji RC recently returned from doing an assessment on the Yasawa islands. The Fiji RC has distributed 100 family relief packs, 40 tarpaulins and 20 kitchen packs and expects to distribute another 100 relief packs. The total expenditure is AUD 24,000; it is expected this will be fully covered by the British Government and Australian RC. (IFRC, 19 Mar 1997)
