Face au problème de la contamination des eaux, les équipes d'Action contre la Faim -présentes dans cette région depuis 1994-, ont lancé en urgence un programme de prévention des risques d'épidémies.

  1. On May 28 (Fri), the Government of Japan decided to provide emergency assistance in kind (blankets, water purifiers, plastic jerry cans, and plastic sheets, etc.), equivalent to about 10 million yen, to the Union of Myanmar, which has sustained damage from tidal waves and strong winds caused by a cyclone.

    2. In Myanmar, from 8:30 to 15:30 on May 19 (Wed), three-meter-high waves that hit mainly the Sittwe district near the border with Bangladesh left more than 100 persons dead, more than 10,000 afflicted and about 2,000 houses totally or partially destroyed (as of May 28).

Unnamed tropical storm 02B came ashore along the northwest coast of Burma (Myanmar) on the 19th of May 2004 bringing with it strong winds and heavy rains. The system formed in the northern Bay of Bengal on May 17, and moved east as a strong tropical storm with maximum sustained winds estimated at 60 knots (69 mph) by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center as it crossed the coast of Burma. The system came ashore near the port city of Sittwe not far from the border with Bangladesh.
