1. WHO ARE WE?

Humanitarian organisations – including United Nations agencies, international non-governmental organisations and national non-governmental organisations - are working in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states to help the women, children and men who have been forced to flee their homes as a result of the conflict as well as the communities that host and support them.

We are about 2,000 Nigerians and 500 international staff in the three states.

2. WHAT ARE WE DOING?

As at end December 2017, UN-coordinated appeals and refugee response plans within the Global Humanitarian Overview (GHO) required US$24.7 billion to meet the humanitarian needs of 105.1 million crisis-affected people in 38 countries. Together the appeals were funded at $13.8 billion, or 54% of requirements. Funding for the appeals in 2017 fell 46% short of requirements, with $10.9 billion outstanding.

Background

  • Damboa is one of 27 local government areas (LGAs) in Borno State; the capital is Damboa town. With an area of 6,200 km², the population of this LGA currently stands at 151,600 including nearly 80,000 Internally Displaced Persons in the LGA who all need humanitarian assistance.
    Damboa is also one of the 16 LGAs that constitute the Borno Emirate Council under the Shehu of Borno.

  • In 2012, following contentious local elections, Alhaji Lawan Kabu, the former LGA Chairman was assassinated.

Around 700 Nigerian asylum seekers have moved to Minawao camp, the main refugee settlement in Far North region, in the past fortnight. The majority fled to Cameroon in 2013 - 2014 and had been living within communities in Mayo Tsanaga department.

Background

  • The Bama local government area (LGA) has been severely affected by the conflict in north-east Nigeria. Bama town, the second largest in the state of Borno, was repeatedly attacked between May 2013 and September 2014 and finally seized by non-state armed groups, who turned it into their headquarters. Relatively close to the border with Cameroon, it was once a thriving commercial hub, home to 250,000 people.
