Programme purpose: To increase the capacity of the International Federation to assist National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies to reduce the number of deaths, injuries and impact from disasters through the provision of timely and adequate financial support for disaster response from the Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF).

Programme summary:

During the first six months of the year, the DREF allocated a total of CHF 7,484,779 in 49 different allocations to 32 Red Cross Red Crescent National Societies.

Main findings

Infectious diseases cause close to 14 million deaths every year worldwide. But the mortality rate should not be the only factor considered and can even be misleading. Even though noncommunicable diseases are now responsible for the majority of deaths worldwide, this report shows that communicable diseases are still indeed the dominant burden in poor and vulnerable settings. This further increases the inequality for health and care between rich and poor countries.

SILVER SPRING, Md.-One month after torrential rains flooded the town of Tartagal in northwestern Argentina, triggering severe flooding and a major landslide, survivors are still in desperate need of basic necessities, such as clean water, food, clothing, and mattresses, said the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA).

Continuous rain in the northern Argentinean province of Salta caused a major landslide in February. According the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent 17,000 families have been affected. The city of Tartagal, with a population of 60,000, suffered heavy damage to homes and infrastructure. Emergency relief aid such as food, drinking water, basic medical care, shelter, and clothing items are needed.

The Rotary Club of Tartagal has been assisting victims through provision of water, food, medicines, mattresses, and clothes.

This bulletin is being issued for information only. On 9 February 2009, due to intense rainfall a landslide took place on the western mountainous city of Tartagal in the province of Salta.

The Argentine Red Cross (ARC), with the support of the International Federation, have determined that external assistance is not required at this moment, and is therefore not seeking funding or other assistance from donors.

El fenómeno se produjo en la ciudad de Tartagal, localidad cabecera del departamento de San Martín, en la Provincia de Salta.

El alud (de agua, barro y restos de madera) que bajó desde las serranías del oeste por el cauce del río Tartagal, se produjo en horas de la mañana del día de ayer en Tartagal, Provincia de Salta, como consecuencia de las lluvias ocurridas dicha provincia. Este fenómeno provocó graves daños en la ciudad de Tartagal.

Fue lapso de tiempo que no superó la media hora, montículos de arena, troncos y árboles, se esparcieron por unas 25 cuadras.

El día 9 del corriente un alud de barro, agua y troncos arrasó numerosos barrios de la ciudad de Tartagal, (provincia de Salta en el noroeste argentino) por lo que centenares de personas debieron ser evacuadas. El fenómeno se produjo como consecuencia de la crecida del río que atraviesa esa ciudad del norte salteño.
