Disaster description

On Tuesday, 20 January 2026, a severe weather system brought widespread unsettled conditions across Algeria, with heavy rainfall, strong winds, and snowfall at higher elevations. The National Meteorological Office issued Level 2 weather alerts for multiple wilayas in the western and central regions. The heavy rains triggered flash floods in several provinces, including Relizane, Chlef, Tiaret, Tissemsilt, Médéa, and Aïn Defla. Civil Defense authorities confirmed at least one fatality—a 60-year-old man whose body was recovered near Oued Al-Safa in Relizane province.
