DR Congo: Floods and Landslides - Nov 2025
Disaster description
On the night of Tuesday 11 to Wednesday 12 November 2025, starting at 1:05 a.m., torrential rains hit Kinshasa, causing flash floods, widespread flooding and major material damage, as well as loss of life. In total, 21 out of 24 communes were affected. In 20 communes that submitted consolidated data, the toll reports 99,138 people affected (i.e., 16,523 households), 10,555 houses flooded, 860 houses destroyed, 153 people injured and 10 deaths, across 138 neighbourhoods. On 9-10 December, very heavy rainfall affected the port city of Boma in the province of Kongo Central in the west of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), causing flooding which resulted in fatalities and damage. (ECHO, 16 Dec 2026)
On 13 January, following heavy rainfall, a landslide struck Burutsi village, North Kivu, in the northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, resulting in fatalities and damage. As of 13 January, media reports at least 13 fatalities, 30 people still missing, and four people injured. At least ten homes were destroyed and parts of the Goma-Masisi-Walikale road was cut off. Over the next 48 hours, additional rainfall with isolated thunderstorms is expected across large parts of the DRC, including in the east (and North Kivu), south, and west of the country. A new huge landslide, triggered by very heavy rainfall during the previous days, occurred in the Rubaya mine area, close to the Rubaya town (Masisi territory, North Kivu province, north-eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo) on 6 March, causing casualties and widespread damage. Media reports, as of 11 March, at least 300 unconfirmed fatalities among the miners and among the families in the surrounding areas. Several destroyed houses were reported across the affected area. On 3 March a similar event caused approximately 200 fatalities in the same area. (ECHO, 11 Mar 2026)
