Cameroon: Floods and Landslides - July 2025

Disaster description

Heavy rain has triggered a landslide in Foumban city, Noun department, West Region, Cameroon, causing displacement and significant material damage. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), as of 12 August, reports one injured person, 1,320 people displaced, and a total of 3,600 people affected. Many houses and infrastructure have been destroyed. (ECHO, 13 Aug 2025)

In July 2025, early seasonal rains hit the Far North Region, affecting over 700 people in Mayo-Danay and Logone-et-Chari, with 2 deaths, destruction of more than 500 houses, and damage to 109 classrooms and several health facilities. On 13 July 2025, floods in Mayo-Tsanaga (Mozogo, Nguetchewé, Korsamba, Kaliari) affected 914 people (269 households), destroying 292 houses, 117 hectares of crops, 392 latrines, and 77 water points. On 5 August 2025, torrential rains lasting more than 5 hours inundated 11 arrondissements of Mayo-Danay, destroying crops (millet, maize, cotton, groundnut) and homes in Gobo, Yagoua, Guéré, Wina, Datchéka, Doukoula, Tchatibali, Vélé, Kaï-Kaï, and Maga. On 12 August 2025, heavy rains in Hina subdivision (Mayo-Tsanaga) damaged farmland, homes, and community infrastructure. (IFRC, 20 Aug 2025)

The Far North, already vulnerable due to years of climate change, was battered by violent winds and relentless rains. In the Logone and Chari department, rainfall exceeded historical averages by over 25%, causing the Logone River and its tributaries to overflow. Over 843,000 hectares were submerged, including 82,500 hectares of cropland, 263 schools, 47 health centers, and more than 56,000 homes. Thirty lives were lost, and 356,730 people – including 21,115 refugees – were affected or displaced. (OCHA, 5 Oct 2025)
