Viet Nam: Floods and Landslides - Jul 2025
Disaster description
Over the last few days, Tuyên Quang province in northeastern Viet Nam has been affected by storms, strong winds, and landslides, resulting in fatalities and damage. According to the ASEAN Disaster Information Network (ADINet) and as of 11 July, one person died due to a lightning strike and 13 houses had to be evacuated, with a total of 280 people affected. In addition, 70 buildings were affected and 0.66 ha of cropland were damaged. (ECHO, 14 Jul 2025 )
Since 26 July, heavy rainfall has been affecting Viet Nam, causing floods and landslides that have resulted in casualties and damage. According to the ASEAN Disaster Information Network (ADINet) and as of 28 July, five people died and one person is missing in Son La province, in north-western Viet Nam, due to flash floods and landslides. Across Son La and Ca Mau provinces, which were hit by strong winds, a total of 110 people and 22 houses have been affected, with five houses that have been totally damaged. (ECHO, 30 Jul 2025 )
Between 4 and 5 August, heavy rainfall triggered flash floods and landslides across northern Viet Nam, disrupted affecting Dien Bien, Son La, and Thanh Hoa provinces. In Dien Bien, according to local authorities, three people were reported dead, two injured, and eight missing. In Xa Dung and Tia Dinh communes, landslides continue to block access, hampering rescue efforts. In Son La, overnight rainfall has caused Nam Ban Stream in Pung Banh commune to overflow, damaged total of nine homes. While in Thanh Hoa, landslides in Na Meo commune cut off road access, putting residents at risk of isolation. Rescue and recovery operations are continuing across all affected provinces. Heavy rainfall has been affecting central and northern Vietnam (mainly Thanh Hoa, Son La, Thai Nguyen, Bac Ninh, and Dong Nai provinces) since 20 August, causing floods and triggering landslides that have resulted in casualties and damage. Media report, as at 22 August, two fatalities across the Thanh Hoa province, due to floods. In addition, the ASEAN Disaster Information Network (ADINet) also reports, as at the same date, a total of nearly 3,600 affected people and approximately 900 damaged houses across the Thai Nguyen (the worst affected), Son La, Bac Ninh, and Dong Nai provinces due to floods and landslides. Heavy rainfall has been affecting central Vietnam since 5 September, causing floods and triggering landslides. ADINet reports, as of 8 September, one fatality in Lam Dong province [and] 120 affected people and 24 damaged houses across Gia Lai, Dak Lak, and Lam Dong due to floods and landslides. Heavy rainfall, strong winds and lightning have been affecting several provinces of southern Viet Nam - Ha Tinh, Tuyen Quang, Lao Cai, Son La, Ca Mau, Dong Nai and An Giang - since 11 September. ADINet reports one fatality in Ha Tinh and one injured person in Son La due to lightning; more than 1,800 people are affected, over 450 houses and three schools have been damaged across the aforementioned provinces. As of 2 October, floods and landslides have left 65 people dead or missing (including 56 confirmed deaths and 11 missing) and 172 injured. The disaster has caused extensive destruction across multiple sectors. In housing and shelter, 389 houses collapsed, 179,881 were damaged or unroofed, and 12,287 were flooded, displacing thousands of people. In livelihoods and agriculture, 100,672 hectares of crops, 50,868 hectares of forest, and 19,095 hectares of aquaculture were affected; 2,265 livestock and more than 519,000 poultry were lost. In the irrigation sector, 154,764 meters of canals and 489 irrigation facilities were destroyed. Regarding the dike system, 51 incidents were reported—mainly in Ninh Binh, Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, and Ha Tinh—all of which are being monitored and addressed locally. (IFRC, 13 Oct 2025)
Heavy rainfall has been affecting central Viet Nam, particularly the provinces of Quang Tri, Hue, Da Nang, and Quang Ngai, since 25 October, causing flooding and landslides that resulted in population displacement and damage. According to the ASEAN Disaster Information Network (ADINet), 2,621 people have been displaced in landslide-prone areas, including 1,891 in Da Nang, 730 in Hue, and 116 in Quang Ngai provinces, and 3,120 have been affected. At least 19 houses have been affected, with three that have been partially damaged, and a total of 38 affected roads, including three roads blocked by landslides, one blocked highway. As at 30 October, the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on Disaster Management (AHA Centre) and the IFRC reports of ten fatalities, eight people still missing, and 22 people injured. IFRC further indicates that 25,878 people are displaced and a total of 400,000 affected. 51 houses collapsed completely, 122 houses are damaged in parts, while 128,024 additional houses are flooded. In total, 90 communes have been affected across Quang Tri, Hue City, Da Nang City, and Quang Ngai. (ECHO, 31 Oct 2025)
On 31 October, floods and heavy rains across provinces and cities from Ha Tinh to Quang Ngai and Lam Dong resulted in 28 deaths), 6 people missing, and 43 people injured. According to preliminary reports, more than 133,000 houses were flooded, over 22,000 of which remain inundated. Agricultural losses are also significant, with floods affecting nearly 4,950 hectares of rice and crops, and over 800 hectares of fruit trees and other plantations. More than 22,000 livestock and poultry have died or been washed away. [...] The Viet Nam Government and the United Nations launched a Joint Response which aims to reach 406,000 of the most vulnerable and affected people of them with direct assistance. A total of US$49.4 million is required to rapidly deliver these life-saving response activities over the next 6 months. (OCHA, 3 Nov 2025)
Heavy rainfall has been affecting central Viet Nam, particularly the provinces of Quang Tri, Da Nang, Hue, and Khanh Hoa, since 14 November, causing flooding and landslides that resulted in casualties and damage. According to ADINet, [as of] 17 November, six people died, four are missing, and 19 have been injured due to a landslide triggered by heavy rainfall in Khanh Hoa province. A total of 670 people have been displaced, 13 roads and five houses have been affected. In Hue city, one major road was blocked by flooding and landslides, and several villages have been isolated. According to media, as of 23 November, at least 90 people died, and 12 people are missing. Around 186,000 homes have been damaged across the country, while nearly 80,000 ha of cropland has also been damaged. Several national highways were blocked on 23 November due to flooding and landslides. Following the passage of topical cyclones Fengshen and Kalmaegi, Viet Nam activated the Union Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM) on 13 November requesting shelter, hygiene, non-food items and health and rescue equipment. Luxembourg and Germany offered shelter and hygiene items. (ECHO, 24 Nov 2025)
The recent flood as of November 2025 across central southern especially in Quang Ngai, Gia Lai, Dak Lak, Lum Dong, Khanh Hoa, Quang Tri and Da Nang have caused widespread and multi-sectoral impacts, affecting people with limited access to essential services. The latest information from VNDMA indicates an estimated 1.3 million affected people across these provinces. As of 27 November, [...] a total of 108 people has been reported dead or missing. Preliminary estimates place the economic loss at VND 14,352 billion (approximately CHF 437 million), with Dak Lak and Khanh Hoa reporting the largest damages. On 14 December, a landslide occurred in the commune of Mai Chau, Phu Tho province, northern Vietnam, resulting in fatalities and damage. As of 15 December, media report that three people were killed and two were injured in Thung Khe hamlet, Mai Chau commune, as the landslide hit parts of the National Highway 6. The highway was reopened on 15 December, after extensive debris removal. However, authorities mentioned continued instability and warn of a continued threat to traffic along the highway.
