
Bolivia: Heavy Rains and Floods - Mar 2025
Disaster description
Since the start of the rainy season, VIDECI has reported a total of 76,563 flood-affected families and 216,542 affected families nationwide as of March 17, 2025. These figures represent an increase of 144.7% and 131.4%, respectively, compared to the data from February 17, 2025. In the nine departments, 186 municipalities and 3,580 communities have been affected. Of these, 73 municipalities have been declared in a state of disaster and 19 in a state of emergency. In the department of La Paz, which has been declared a state of emergency, as well as in Chuquisaca and Beni, 40 municipalities are in a state of disaster. Media report, as of 26 March, 50 fatalities, eight still-missing persons, more than 368,700 affected families—with a large part of these displaced—and 770 destroyed houses across 204 municipalities throughout the country. The worst affected is the Palos Blancos municipality, La Paz department. In addition, 109 municipalities declared a state of emergency. (ECHO, 26 Mar 2025)
The death toll from the heavy rainfall and strong winds that have been affecting most of Bolivia since the beginning of the rainy season (November 2024) is increasing. According to media, as of 7 April, at least 55 people died, 103 families have been displaced in La Paz, Santa Cruz and Potosí departments, and 590,529 people across 232 municipalities have been affected, with La Paz, Santa Cruz, Beni, Oruro and Chuquisaca departments as the worst-affected. In addition, 1,204 houses have been destroyed. Five departments declared a national emergency or disaster. (ECHO, 08 Apr 2025)
According to the Government of Bolivia, as of 15 April, the death toll has reached 55, with eight people still reported missing. Nearly 2.4 million people have been affected, and a total of 234 municipalities have been impacted. Of these, 135 have declared a state of disaster, while the remaining municipalities have declared a state of emergency. (ECHO, 16 Apr 2025)
