Ecuador: Floods and Landslides - Jan 2025

Disaster description

Severe weather due to heavy rainfall has been affecting most of Ecuador since January. This has caused floods and landslides, and an increasing number of affected people and damage. According to media reports, at least nine people died, 19,969 people have been affected, 35 houses have been destroyed, and 5,913 houses and 12 bridges have been damaged due to landslides, floods and severe weather-related incidents across 23 out of 24 provinces in Ecuador. A state of emergency has been declared in eight provinces on 25 February. The Copernicus Emergency Management Service (EMSR 789) was activated on 26 February to provide flood extent emergency mapping, one map has been produced so far. (ECHO, 27 Feb 2025)

The humanitarian impact of the heavy rain that caused floods and landslides in most parts of Ecuador is increasing. As of 7 March, the National Secretariat for Risk Management (SNGR) reports at least 16 fatalities, 91 injured people, 168 displaced and a total of 80,126 affected people. In addition, 21,145 houses were affected, including 98 that have been destroyed. On 6 March, Ecuador requested assistance from the Union Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM) consisting of food, WASH, shelter and drainage material items for managing the floods in the country. The Copernicus Emergency Management Service (EMSR789) was activated on 26 February to provide flood extent emergency mapping, 32 maps have been produced so far. (ECHO, 7 Mar 2025)

Heavy rainfall persists across much of Ecuador, causing severe flooding and landslides that resulted in a rising death toll and extensive damage. The most affected regions are located in the west of the country, including the provinces of Manabí, Guayas, Los Ríos, El Oro, Esmeraldas, Loja, Chimborazo, Cotopaxi, Pichincha and Imbabura. As of 19 March, the National Secretariat of Risk Management (SGR) reports 20 fatalities, 6 missing, 95 injured, 306 evacuated people, and a total of 108,227 people affected. In addition, 29,984 houses were damaged, including 138 that have been destroyed. On 18 March, the Copernicus Emergency Management Service was activated in rapid-mapping mode (EMSR 796) to provide damage assessment in the affected areas. (ECHO, 19 Mar 2025)
