According to the observations at (09:30)hrs M.S.T today, the low pressure area over the North Bay of Bengal still persists. It is forecast to intensify into a depression during next (48)hrs.

General caution

Due to the low pressure area, rain or thundershowers will be widespread in Sagaing, Mandalay, Magway, Bago, Yangon, Ayeyarwady and Taninthayi Regions, Rakhine, Kayin and Mon States with regionally and isolated heavyfalls and strong wind.

BANGLADESH

Heavy monsoon rains have led to flooding across the country.
According to the Government and the Joint Needs Assessment, 7.3 million people are affected, 119 people killed, and over 300,000 people displaced. Over 580,000 homes were damaged or destroyed, and 2,500 schools are either damaged by floods or being used as evacuation shelters, disrupting classes for up to 400,000 children. The Government is leading response efforts, supported by NGOs, the Red Crescent, and the UN.

MYANMAR

  • Monsoon floods continue to affect Myanmar with over 78,000 people having been displaced in eight states and regions.
    State and regional governments, the Department of Disaster Management, the Myanmar Red Cross Society, civil society organizations and private individuals are responding to the immediate needs of those affected or displaced by floods.
    The rivers are currently below their danger levels. However, heavy rainfall is expected across the country over the next couple of days according to the forecast by the Myanmar Department of Meteorology and Hydrology.

OVERVIEW

As a result of torrential monsoon rains mid July, over 25 million people have been affected by flooding in Bangladesh, India, Nepal and Myanmar. At least 600 people are known to have died and over half a million people have been displaced with homes, schools and hospitals damaged or destroyed. There is the possibility that the situation could deteriorate further as rains continue in many of the flood-affected areas.

HIGHLIGHTS

• Monsoon floods that have affected eight states and regions are estimated to have displaced more than 78,000 people.

• Where flood waters have receded, evacuation centres have been closed and people have returned to their homes.

• However, with water moving to the south, floods have affected Sagaing, Mandalay and Magway regions where over 43,000 people were evacuated.

More than 12 million people are affected by heavy rains, landslides and flooding brought about by monsoon rains in Bangladesh, India, and Nepal. Myanmar has also been affected. Some areas are still inaccessible because of the floods and landslides. There are about 152 deaths across the region.
