The West and Central Africa region has experienced severe flooding in the 2017 rainy season, causing significant material and human casualties. A combination of swollen rivers and high impact incidents has led to destruction of infrastructure and agricultural assets, population displacement, and complications for access and relief assistance.

Depuis le début de la saison hivernale, 12 régions sur 13 ont enregistré des conséquences matérielles et humaines des inondations et vents violents. Le bilan cumulé à la date du 24 août 2017, selon les données du SP/CONASUR, on a enregistré 15 909 personnes sinistrées avec 12 décès, 72 blessés et 1 242 sans-abris. Sur le plan matériel, il y a 2.505 habitations, 17 écoles, et 5 formations sanitaires qui ont été détruites, 172,4 tonnes de vivres perdus, des greniers dévastés ainsi que des pertes d’animaux.

I. Situation pluviométrique

Les cumuls de pluie enregistrés du 1er au 30 juin 2017 sont significatifs dans la majeure partie du Sahel. Des quantités importantes des pluies ont été enregistrées dans le Sud du Tchad, le centre et l’ouest du Niger, le Nord du Burkina, dans la majeure partie de la zone agricole du Mali, le sud du Sénégal, presque toute la Gambie, au Nord-ouest et au Nord-Est du Nigeria.

  2. Repeated weeks of very heavy, above-normal rains have oversaturated the ground in parts of Ethiopia, Sudan, and South Sudan. More heavy rain during the next week is likely to cause further flooding.

  2. Torrential rain led to destroyed houses in Central Darfur, Sudan. Heavy rain is forecast to continue during the next week. High flooding risks in the region continue.

Rainfall continues over most of West Africa and northern East Africa

  1. Below-average rainfall since late February has resulted in moisture deficits throughout many parts of southern South Sudan, Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia, Somalia, and northern Tanzania.

  2. Limited rainfall since March has led to developing moisture deficits across parts of Liberia, Cote d’Ivoire, and southern Guinea.

BURKINA FASO

FLOODS AFFECT OVER 5,000

Floods and violent winds have killed three people, injured 18 others and destroyed more than 750 houses across the country since the start of May. Overall, 5,129 people have been affected in several localities in the country’s East and South-Western regions. The National Emergency Response Council has provided food and basic household items to the affected families.

CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC

Depuis le début du mois de Mai 2017, plusieurs localités du pays ont été aectées par des inondations et des vents violents. Selon le SP/CONASUR à la date du 18 Mai 2017, des dégâts liés aux pluies et aux vents violents ont été enregistrés dans deux régions. Au plan humain, on a enregistré des décès (3), des blessés (18) des sans-abris (104). Les dégâts matériels concernent des infrastructures détruites : maisons d’habitation (756), commerces (2), établissements sanitaires (2) et scolaires (3), et des greniers dévastés (39).
