ECW Annual Results Report: Over 650,000 Children Reached in the Fund’s First Year of Operations

New York, 6 July 2018 – The just-released ECW annual results report shows ECW’s investments have reached more than 650,000 children and youth affected by conflict and natural disasters during the Fund’s first year of operations from April 2017 to March 2018. In total ECW invested US$82 million in 14 crisis-affected countries.

Highlights

The floods caused by the coastal El Niño phenomenon between January and March 2017 affected 1.9 million people in Peru, nearly a third of them children. Thousands of families lost their homes and sources of income, leaving many children in need of urgent assistance.

In 2017, UNICEF provided humanitarian assistance in the sectors of Water,
Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), Protection, Nutrition, Health and Education, reaching nearly 194,000 people in the most affected districts of Piura, Lambayeque and La Libertad regions.

Situation analysis

A year following the heavy rainfall, floods and landslides that affected 1.8 million people, the impacts of the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) are still present in Peru’s coastal regions (Tumbes, Piura, Lambayeque, La Libertad, Ancash, Lima and Ica). According to the National Institute for Civil Defence (INDECI), this disaster led to 164 deaths, 505 people injured and 20 remain missing.

This second revised Emergency Appeal seeks 2,348,442 Swiss francs (reduced from 4,740,589 Swiss francs) to enable the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) to support the Peruvian Red Cross (PRC) to deliver humanitarian assistance to some 35,000 people (reduced from 50,000 people) over 12 months with a focus on the following sectors: health; water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH); shelter and settlement; disaster risk reduction (DRR); and National Society capacity building.

  • UNICEF has reached 21,592 people, including children and adolescents, in Piura with safe water.

Highlights

UNICEF has provided humanitarian assistance in WASH, Protection, Nutrition, Health and Education to 123,560 children and families in the most affected district of Piura.

• UNICEF and Plan International have implemented 16 temporary classrooms located in the following shelters: Nueva Santa Rosa (10), Cristo Viene (2), Tupac Amaru (2) and Jesus de Nazareth (2). This action has reached around 450 children.

• To date, UNICEF has provided 220 school kits to the students of Santa Rosa, Cristo Viene and Tupac Amaru shelters.
